Getting cited on the sources ChatGPT already trusts

The single biggest lever in GEO isn't your website — it's the third-party sources AI pulls from when it answers. Get mentioned on the right ones, in the right context, and the recommendation follows. Here's how to work it, practically.
First, find the sources that matter
Don't guess. For any buying-intent question in your category, the engines cite a fairly consistent set of pages. Your job is to find the ones where a competitor appears and you don't — that gap list is your target set. (A visibility check will hand it to you.)
The usual high-value sources
- Review and comparison sites — G2, Capterra, and category-specific equivalents
- Communities where buyers ask for advice — Reddit and niche forums
- Reference pages — Wikipedia and well-maintained wikis
- Industry media, news and PR
- Creator content — YouTube reviews and roundups
How to earn presence on them
- Reviews: get real customers to leave honest reviews on G2/Capterra — volume and recency both matter.
- Communities: participate genuinely; be the helpful answer, not the ad. Engines read the useful reply, not the spam.
- Comparisons & roundups: pitch to be included in “best X” and “alternatives to Y” articles where you legitimately belong.
- PR & data: publish something worth citing — original data, a strong point of view — and get it covered.
- Placements: where it makes sense, sponsor legitimate, disclosed placements on trusted sources — and measure the lift.
Do it honestly — it's also what works
Fake reviews and undisclosed manipulation get removed and can poison the well. Disclosed, legitimate presence is both the ethical choice and the durable one: it survives moderation and keeps compounding. When you pay for a placement, it should be marked as sponsored.
Then measure the lift
Because AI answers are probabilistic, the only honest way to know a source moved the needle is to baseline your visibility, earn the mention, and re-measure across many runs. That's the difference between “we got a link” and “AI now names us more often”.

FAQ
Not always. Reviews, community presence and earned coverage are free but slower. Paid, disclosed placements can accelerate — the key is measuring whether they actually lift your visibility.
Engines weigh trusted sources; a disclosed placement on a trusted source is legitimate context. Undisclosed manipulation is what gets penalized — and it's not worth it.
